Uncle demands family member return car he gave them 3 years ago: 'I said, "You literally gave it to me'"

After his own car got totaled, this uncle decided he wanted his "old" car back. Too bad it's been in a family member's care for literally 3 years now!

Life becomes very difficult when you're used to driving your car everywhere and then suddenly, it's wrecked! You have no car any more. How do you get to work? How do you get groceries? How will you shuttle your kids to school and all their activities? And how do you get yourself a replacement vehicle as fast as humanly possible?

  • This person was originally very happy when their uncle blessed them with his car. According to them, he literally gave to them with a signed title and everything. Since this person assumed it was their car, they've been doing all the usual upkeep: “paying insurance, registration, maintenance, everything.” Makes sense, right? That car is theirs now, so they may as well act like it. 

    Well… now their uncle is having a change of heart, and it honestly doesn't look good for him. Instead of asking his family members for rides, or asking their advice for what to do next, he really, really, really wants this original car back. 

    I get his frustration, and the urgency of not having a car can be a big nuisance. But he's isolating family members by insisting on having his old vehicle back. This person probably would've had no problem giving Unc a ride around town because he was generous enough to give them his car years ago. Now, he's ruined that chance at goodwill.

    My uncle gave me his old Honda Civic 3 years ago when I graduated high school.

    "Family loans don't need paperwork," is a wild thing to say! Especially when he's proving exactly why we have documentation of vehicle ownership in the first place.

    How is that a loan?? TL;DR: Uncle gave me car 3 years ago with signed title, now wants it back claiming it was a loan, I've paid all costs and refuse to return it, family says I'm being difficult.

    This is the uncle's problem to solve, unfortunatley. He's scrambling to try and get back on the road, but this isn't the way to do it. Since this person's other family members are so supportive of the uncle's wishes, maybe one of them will give up their own precious car to him. Oh, no, they won't? What a surprise! It's almost like once you have the paperwork to show that a car is yours, it is yours. 

    You don't see a car dealer showing up 5 years after you get your new vehicle to take it back just because they feel like it! This uncle needs to adjust his expectations. Hopefully after working with his own insurance company, he can get back on the road once more.

    saucyuproar NTJ. The title was signed over to you and has been in your name for 3 years. That's not a loan, that's a completed transfer of ownership. You've paid insurance, registration, and put money into maintenance the entire time. Legally and practically, it's your car. I understand he's in a tough spot after totaling his car, but that doesn't undo a gift from years ago. It's not selfish to keep something that was formally given to you and that you rely on for work.

    Careless-Image-885 NTJ. Put the car title where NO ONE, including your mother, cannot take it from you. Tell him to call the police then mute him. Keep all texts/emails.
